Round 9 Results
MENS ROUND 9 RESULTS
Our men’s program had a mixed bag of results this weekend.
MENS SENIORS:
SOME WORDS FROM COACH JORDIE.
Collegians 80 defeated by Old Brighton 82.
Our boys brought great intent and pressure, and were able to generate some very good opportunities.
We had ourselves in a strong position, but we’re unable to hold on.
Credit to Brighton, they gained some serious ascendency by dominating contested footy in the last quarter.
Our boys kept trying to the very end, but ultimately fell short. We’ll take some great learnings from the game.
The onball brigade of Ong, Watson, Boucher and Mayhood were super. Bielby and Davy also continue their great seasons down back.
MENS RESERVES:
Collegians 44 defeated by Old Brighton 98.
We held our own against Old Brighton right until the final term. A 2 goal to 4 first term kept us in check.
With just one quarter to play, we trailed by just 9 points, but ran out of steam in the final term, as Brighton piled on seven unanswered goals.
Adam Celik, Luke Smith, Thomas Sargent, Will Dean, Timothy van Twest and Ben Hill were our best.
Hill also kicked three goals.
MENS THIRDS (Round 10):
Collegians defeated Beaumaris (FORFEIT).
A win by default this weekend handed to our Thirds, after a forfeit from Beaumaris.
MENS UNDER 19s (Round 10):
SOME WORDS FROM COACH RICK.
Collegians 66 defeated PEGS 41.
The 19s were faced with 11 changes from last round in a wonderful opportunity to test our depth.
We managed to control the majority of the game and after jumping away to an early 5 goal lead, we were able to hold on and win by 25 points.
Excellent contortions from the entire midfield group with Riley Seidler the standout.
Another excellent performance by Lucas Woolfe down back who is really developing his game.
Co-Captain Mario McKeown contributed well with 3 goals for the game.
One win on the board this weekend, going the way of our Women’s Thirds.
Coach Dom Lucarelli with the recap.
WOMENS SENIORS:
Collegians 23 defeated by Kew 51.
Jumped early by Kew who kicked 4 unanswered goals in the first 8 minutes, the senior team were pressed hard early, especially in the midfield, where Kew stands as the clear best in the competition.
Krystal Russell toiled in the ruck, but we struggled to get effective clearances, and our back 5 were under siege for much of the first half.
A steadying half time helped, and from that point of the game, the team controlled all major metrics, except scoring efficiency, allowing Kew just 4 more scoring shots, while peppering 10 of our own.
But ultimately, with a score of 2 goals 11, no amount of time in the forward arc, nor shots on the scoring face could rescue the result.
Effective usage of the ball around goals will be a key focus as the team prepares this week to take on Melbourne University who are building strongly into the second half of the season.
WOMENS RESERVES:
Collegians 24 defeated Kew 19.
A nail biter to the last second! Playing ladder leader Kew, our Reserve girls again toiled with no bench.
Kew are a very strong team, and the game turned into an arm wrestle, with no team ever more than 2 kicks in front.
Heading into the last quarter, we were down to just 17 on field, and the team played some of their best football for the season, coached brilliantly by Harriet Richardson who kept the players in the moment and focused on the monumental task at hand of beating the undefeated ladder leaders.
A physical final quarter followed, led by strong ruck work from Rebecca Rundle, and superb drive from Lydia Rainey who continues to shine.
Emma Meggs returned for her first game of Reserves this season, and was in the best as well.
The game went down to the wire, and in the final 30 seconds, a fast break from Kew threatened to flip the lead, but an enormous tackle from Lydia Rainey caused a turn over, and the players cooled the momentum, and crossed the finish line together victorious!
WOMENS THIRDS:
Collegians 0 defeated by Marcellin 118.
A little low on numbers, and playing great opposition, our Divisional team put in a four quarter effort, and should be proud of their consistency against the reigning Premiers.
While the result shows a huge difference between the teams score wise, the attitude and approach of our players was excellent, and the efforts of coach Matt Foster, Nikki Atkin (OW) and head of the program Steph Leondidis should be lauded.
We re-load and go again this coming week against top of the ladder Old Brighton.
