MENS ROUND 5 RESULTS
A near perfect run for our Men’s program in Round 5.
MENS SENIORS:
SOME WORDS FROM COACH - JORDIE McKENZIE
It was a hard fought win against Uni Blacks.
We had a terrific second quarter in which we used ours hands and kept speed in the ball. We were unable to capitalise on some good looks in the 3rd quarter.
Credit to Blacks, they got themselves back in the game. The boys hung on in a tense file term where Blacks kept coming.
It was great for this young group to stick it out and grind the win.
Richie Andrew earned his debut and showed he was up to the level.
Jasper Davy continues his terrific form, and along with the other back 6, held us in good stead.
We are looking forward to another big game next week vs St Bernards, in Sam Hibbins 200th!
MENS RESERVES:
Our Mens Reserves finally got themselves back onto the winners list with a gutsy six point win over Uni Blacks at home.
The boys kicked out to a 19-point half tme lead and managed to hold off the fast finishing Uni Blacks.
Teigan Otter, Luke Smith, Jack Meacham, Connor Watson, Flynn Siassios and Will Oakley-Kerr were named in the best.
Will Houghton kicked two goals in the strong victory.
MENS THIRDS (Round 6):
Our Thirds unfortunately went down to Old Geelong in a close tussle away from home.
A slow start saw Old Geelong pile on five goals to two in the opening term, with our boys struggling to recover from there.
It was a much closer battle after half time, but Old Geelong managed to take the win by eight points.
Hayden Nankin, Jack Hanger, Kynan Manning-Stratton, Eoin O Sullivan, Quinn Schwarz and Will Rees were named best afield.
Louis Jorgensen kicked two.
MENS UNDER 19s (Round 6):
Another win for our Under 19s, this time by 16 points over Kew!
After trailing by nine points at quarter time, the boys managed to keep Kew goalless in the second term, while piling on four majors themselves.
Despite a late push from Kew, the damage was already done early and we took the four points.
WOMENS ROUND 5 RESULTS
2/3 this weekend! Let’s hear from our Women’s coach Dom Lucarelli.
WOMENS SENIORS:
Perhaps the greatest comeback of the program to date! Down for almost the entire day, it was a game where our Seniors were dragged down into a congested contest by a highly motivated opposition. the scoreline at 3Q time was Coburg 5.4.34 to Collegians 1.7.13.
Unfazed, the players went to work finding a new gear, with Maddy Shaw kicking 2 in the opening 2 minutes of the final quarter and Roxy Beuzeville charging through a pack and kicking another major, we came within 3 pts of the lead.
Ebony Angelopoulous missed a frustrating set shot to take the lead, but showing her true colours she doubled down, kicking her own 2 goals in 2 minutes, allowing us to race to the front.
Coburg returned fire with a goal with just minutes to spare, but we refused to back down, ultimately racing across the line by 4 pts in one of our best wins to date.
Ada Chessor was incredible across the half back all day clunking intercept marks. Jess Stolz (OW20) calmly held our back 5 up, and Krystal Russell, Roxy Beuzeville, Freya Tayloy, Cam Millias and Ash Bertagno were huge contributors.
Congratulations to senior debutant Tanisha Clark who finished the day with 8 tackles!
WOMENS RESERVES:
Last year Coburg beat our reserve team by 91 points and held our reserve team scoreless.
This year, our completely rebuilt reserve team returned the favour with interest, beating Coburg by 107pts, letting them only score a single goal.
Across the board the team effort was truly a 4 quarter effort, led by rucks Emily Sainty and Sunday Stoney (4 goals).
Ash Ladson, Chelsea McDermott and Chloe Kamberis were dominant through the middle.
Brooke Tuszinsky (5 goals) and Annabelle Schmidt (OW23) (2 goals) lead the division goal kicking with 24 and 10 majors respectively.
WOMENS THIRDS:
After an enormous promotion from division 4 to division 1, the thirds were keen to find what the new standard was like.
With just 16 players available, it was a tough day in the park, but the players put in a strong showing against Marcellin (second on the ladder), ultimately going down to a much stronger opposition by 67 points.
Claire Peters, Lydia Rainer, Aoibhinn Henderson and Ella Travis were all huge for the lions, with Bella Allan snagging our only goal for the day.
