Tellurian winery was founded in 2002 by Ian Hopkins with a dream of making world-class Heathcote shiraz. Bringing together winemaker Tobias Ansted, viticulturist Tim Brown and co-principal Daniel Hopkins (OW 1990), the first vintage of Tellurian shiraz was made in 2008. Four years later a winery and cellar door stood overlooking 23 ha of vineyards including Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvedre, Nero D’Avola, Viognier, Marsanne, Roussanne, Fiano and Riesling.
Tellurian wines were first released in 2010, and immediately received praise from wine media and embraced by some of Australia’s finest restaurants, including Attica, Quay, Grossi Florentino, Donovans, Flower Drum and the Lake House Daylesford and have been enjoyed by British Airways First Class passengers since 2014. James Halliday awarded Tellurian a 5 Star Winery Rating in their second year of release, Campbell Mattinson from Winefront dubbed Tellurian as “one of the finds of the year”, and Nick Stock described Tellurian as “One of the region’s newest and most determined producers with their eye on unearthing Heathcote’s innate drinkability …”.
Twice Tellurian have collected the most Gold Medals at the Heathcote Wine Show winning 3 Golds in 2015 & 2016. Tellurian has also won the Trophy for best Heathcote producer at the VIC100 - Victorian Top 100 wine awards in 2014 and 2015, and in 2016 had 4 wines selected in the top 100 wines.
